DESIGN OF
EQUIPMENT WITH
SEISMICSEISMIC ISOLATIONISOLATION
DEVICES (DAMPERS)

Mitigating seismic demands without compromising the design.

In cases where equipment is installed in regions with high seismicity and the original design cannot be further reinforced, seismic protective systems can mitigate earthquake demands using a modular solution that preserves the original design. Such systems can decouple translational and/or rocking motions as well as dissipate energy with various mechanisms (hysteretic, viscous, etc.). These applications require a deep understanding of the non-linear behavior of the seismic isolation devices and the various types of available devices on the market. Our approach involves several steps: First, we evaluate if such solutions constitute a cost-effective and structurally valid approach, then we advise on the selection of specific seismic isolation devices and on the arrangement which produces the desired results. Lastly, we perform all analysis and testing that is required for the seismic qualification of the equipment while ensuring alignment and guidance among all involved parties including the manufacturer of the dampers.
